Award-winning Photography website gurus liveBooks (which hosts my site) graciously gave away a free one year liveBooks.edu website to one student in Milwaukee based photographer Kevin J Miyazaki's Professional Practices (FA382) photography class at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Five other students won portfolios from Pina Zangaro's PZ Direct. I was invited, along with a jury of other liveBooks clients, to view the students' semester-long project and cast our votes for our top 5 favorite projects.

Kevin Miyazaki is one of those photography teachers we all admire, taking time away from his own work to inspire and instruct his students. His class consists of junior-level photography majors and it addresses the professional world of both fine art and commercial/editorial. They've had a wealth of guest speakers, including Susana Raab, Catherine Edelman (Gallery), Andy Adams (Flak Photo), studio visits with Dave Jordano and Colleen Plumb, trips to the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Haggerty Museum at Marquette University, and visits with studio, wedding and newspaper photographers. Check out the MIAD blog

The WINNERS in order of votes:
1. Autumn Clark, 2. Mandie Louiser, 3. Kayla Newman, 4. Sarah Moore, 5. Tom Owens, 6. Aryn Kresol

These are very talented students and their work is wonderful. Kudos to Kevin Miyazaki for being such a great teacher and inspiration. I especially like the work of Crystal Miller, Sarah Moore, Andrea Payne, and Tom Owens, not ranked in order of preference. Congratulations to them all.

To start out, a "well done" to all! I think Rose Tarman has unique understated sensibility, not heavy handed about her aim. I found her photographs stayed with me quite unexpectedly. Tom Owens work has more artifice, but only enough to lead me, as the viewer into the edges of a dream. Mandie Lousier's is the dream, the dream we have awake at night, very evocation.

Great photos. I liked the symbols of peace too.

PS about R. Tarman, she was really able to change the way I saw foliage, just with the little bit of her work that I experienced!
