Leica Gallery, New York / The Oskar Barnack Room: In addition to the over 35 black and white images in the current exhibition, Return To The Roof of the World, of photographer and Buddhist monk Nicholas Vreeland's journey into Tibet, are a select few color portraits in the gallery's Oskar Barnack Room.

Back in the 1970's, Nicholas Vreeland was invited to photograph the national costumes of India. However, once in India, he met a Tibetan Rinpoche (an incarnate Lama recognized as a great teacher). That Lama, impressed with Vreeland's Deardorff 5 x 7 camera, introduced him to another high Lama to photograph and each successive Lama passed him on to yet another. In the end, Nicholas came away with photographs of the most important Buddhist teachers in exile from Tibet - including a 1979 photograph of H.H. the Dalai Lama and His Holiness’ personal teachers and debating partners, the late Ling Rinpoche and Serkong Rinpoche. Vreeland has since photographed their reincarnations, two are shown above.

In 1965 in Bodh Gaya, India, he was formally enthroned as 97th Gaden Throne Holder. At age 20, HH the 14th Dalai Lama, bestowed fully ordained monk’s (Bhikshu) vows. He's visited South Korea, France, Ladakh and many other countries giving teachings. Presently, he is focusing himself entirely on his study and practice of Buddha Dharma hoping to emulate his predecessor’s great deeds.
