are happening again this Summer! 
The Los Angeles Center of Photography is pleased to announce its Third Annual Portfolio Reviews! Join us this summer for EXPOSURE 2017. The dates are Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Los Angeles Center of Photography and Saturday-Sunday, July 15-16, 2017 at the dnj Gallery in Bergamot Station. Meet face to face with gallery owners, photo editors, museum curators, publishers and other photo professionals.

On Saturday, July 15, 6-8 pm, EXPOSURE 2017 will coincide with LACP’s Fourth Annual Members’ exhibition opening reception at the dnj Gallery. The show is juried by Paula Tognarelli, Executive Director, Griffin Museum of Photography.

I was honored to be invited to curate APA-LA’s sixth annual 2017 OFF THE CLOCK photography exhibition. This was an exciting opportunity for me to view the original, creative and truly inspired personal photography of respected professional photographers.

The task of jurying work is never easy. I was to select 100 images through a blind jury process from almost 1000 entries – a daunting task. I spent hours each day over several weeks getting familiar with all the entries before making final selections. There were a wide range of genre’s, including classical fine art, fictional narratives, documentary, travel, satire, still life, and nudes; all in black and white, duotone, color, wet-plate collodion and other photographic processes.

So much care obviously went into creating each image entered, I decided this was not going to be an exhibition focused around one general theme. Instead, I chose to go for an eclectic range - individual images that captured my attention over and over each time I went through the collection. Outdoors, indoors, studio shots, professional models, demonstrators, whatever caught my eye each time I witnessed it. In the end, I feel there is a diverse movement running through the exhibit, beginning quietly and then shifting into drama, a little humor, some very fine portraiture, dizzying landscapes, and finally driving us into the face of current real-life protests.

Above are just a few of the 100 images in the exhibition that will rotate through some of the most creative advertising agencies in Los Angeles, including Saatchi + Saatchi Los Angeles and Ignited. I thank everyone who entered!

Memories of Internment in Italian Fascist camps 1941–1943

I met photographer Manca Juvan while reviewing for the 2016 Fourth Annual “New York Portfolio Review” sponsored by the New York Times LENS blog and the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism. Manca's long term-photo project, focusing on preserving memory of Italian Fascist Concentration Camps, has since been published in a unique book which has already won the 'Award on 32' at the 2016 Slovenian Book Fair for best design among monographic and bibliophilic books and was a winner in the 2017 International PhotoBook Awards in Los Angeles.

Her description, “This photography book relates to a historic period of World War II, when Kingdom of Italy occupied part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s territory, and when Fascist camps served as an instrument of political and racial persecution. Its importance lies in the general present day historic amnesia in Italy and beyond, where shock is experienced learning that Mussolini’s Italy was not only the aggressor at the time, but it created a network of hundreds of places of internment, not only within the borders of Italy as we know it, but also on territories of today’s Slovenia and Croatia among others. The exact number of the camps remains largely unknown; the number of victims also remains unknown.”

"History has little if anything to say about the Italian camps; as a result, names and places like Rab, Gonars, Visco, Monigo, Chiesanuova, Renicci, Colfiorito, Fraschette di Alatri, Cairo Montenotte and others, where more than 50,000 Slovenes, Croats, Montenegrins and other South Slavs were interned, mean nothing to many, particularly the younger generations."

"This book sheds light on some fragments of the destinies of Slovene victims of these Italian camps; it is an attempt to give voice to the politically induced loss of historic memory and it represents an act of remembrance - a way to pay respect to the past victims and survivors of Italian camps and their relatives."

Debbie Fleming Caffery grew up along the Bayou Teche in southwest Louisiana and still lives in the area. Early on in her career, she was inspired by the work of Dorothea Lange and many of the artists working within the FSA and Federal Arts Project of the WPA during the Depression. Like these forbears, she is interested in telling stories with her pictures, but unlike those earlier photographers, her work is as much artful as it is documentary. Her rich, and dramatic prints are the result of the deep relationships with the people and places she photographs, a visual corollary to the reverence she has for her subjects.

Caffery has photographed the sugarcane industry and its community in Louisiana since the late 1970s. She has also photographed in rural villages in Mexico for many years, creating works that draw connections between those communities and the ones in Louisiana that were so familiar to her from her own upbringing. In 2005, Caffery was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for the work she made of women working in brothels in Mexico. In 2006, she received the Katrina Media Fellowship from the Open Society Foundations to continue to photograph the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Recently Caffery received a commission from the High Museum in Atlanta for their Picturing the South photography initiative. Her monographs include: Carry Me Home (Smithsonian, 1990), The Shadows (Twin Palms Press, 2002) and Polly (Twin Palms Press, 2004), The Spirit + The Flesh (Radius Books, 2009) and Alphabet (Fall Line Press, 2015).

This exhibition brings together two artists, Debbie Fleming Caffery and Machiel Botman, a key figure in Dutch photography, both masters of the gelatin silver print as a medium of self expression. The exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday April, 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. and run through Saturday June 3rd.

Helen Sear (b. 1955) studied Fine Art at Reading University the Slade School of Art, London. Sear's work explores ideas of vision, touch and re-presentation of the nature of experience, with particular reference to the human and animal body and her immediate environment in rural Wales and France.

Writer and curator, David Campany, described Sear as "one of photography's foremost innovators. For her the medium is one of magic as much as realism. It is never pure, fixed or entirely knowable. Each new series presents a new set of challenges that offer up her fascination with craft and our habits of looking."

Sear represented Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2015, has won several artist's awards, including The Major Creative Wales Award from Arts Council Wales (2011) and lives and works in Wales and France.

In the world of fine art and documentary photography it is essential that work is well edited. Whether preparing for portfolio reviews, book proposals, gallery shows or a magazine story, a solid foundation in the fundamentals of editing and sequencing are necessary tools in the  current art market.

We’ve all been there, wallowing in hundreds of images, each a little different from the next. What to choose? In this workshop, Elizabeth Avedon partners with photographer Magdalena Solé to help you hone your eye for efficient self-editing.

This workshop is for photographers with a complete body of work ready to edit. Participants should be proficient in Lightroom or Photo Mechanic. The workshop will be held at Magdalena Solé’s studio in West Halifax, VT located in the beautiful rural countryside of Southern Vermont in an old 1790’s farmhouse. Participants can stay in the nearby town of Wilmington.

"I’m a big fan of graphic novels—an oft derided literary genre—where morality is drawn in black and white; the hero and the villain. There is little patience for ambiguity in the battle between the two. I am over-simplifying comics, but in its essence it has always been a battle between good and evil. Though, like all good fantasy or science fiction, it masks real world issues under the veil of disposable entertainment. The 2016 election felt like an opportune time for me to combine the illustrations of what I saw, with the textual airings of our collective inner monologues. The Comment Section creatively interprets the divisive political landscape during the 2016 United States presidential campaign. Through illustrations and curated public comments, Lowy depicts the enmity between Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, globalists and nationalists, among others. He pairs documentary images turned into illustrations taken during the yearlong run-up to the presidential election, with the absurd rhetoric that filled newsrooms and social media news feeds. The Comment Section gives readers a visual peek into what shook the psyche of a nation. It is a reflection on the growing mis/use of social media and the breakdown of dialogue.’

All illustrations were made from unaltered photographs taken on assignment by photojournalist Benjamin Lowy for Time Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. All tweets and comments were publicly accessible. LOS ANGELES BILLBOARD EXHIBITION: Mona Kuhn + Alex Prager + Jennifer Steinkamp

"For this billboard exhibition, my intention is to expose privacy and intimacy on a collective and public scale. My hope is to transport the audience away from the collective and into the private, and vice versa.” – Mona Kuhn

Mona Kuhn is a highly acclaimed artist and longtime Californian, attending the San Francisco Institute of the Arts before moving to Los Angeles, where she has resided for over 10 years. Known for her large-scale dreamlike images of the human form, her work often references classical themes, though recent works have begun explorations with abstraction. For this exhibition, she has contributed a collage from her upcoming series and book She Disappeared into Silence with text by curator Salvador Nadales, Museo Reina Sofia, to be published Spring/Summer 2017 by Steidl.

“I chose this work for the billboard because it juxtaposes the audience and viewer, provoking the questions who is the performer and who is the audience? Where does reality end and artifice begin?”– Alex Prager

Alex Prager is a Los Angeles-based artist whose elaborately staged scenes tap into a shared cultural memory. She frequently references Hollywood cinema in her photography and film, using it as a tool for manipulating realities. “The construction of the images is intentionally loaded” says MoMA curator Roxana Marcoci. “It reminds me of silent movies – there is something pregnant, about to happen, a mix of desire and angst.” The work shown, Orchestra Center (Intermission), 2016, was recently presented at a solo exhibition of her work entitled La Grande Sortie at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York.

Jennifer Steinkamp

Jennifer Steinkamp is an installation artist who works with video and new media in order to explore ideas about architectural space, motion, and perception. She completed her BFA, MFA and an honorary PhD from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California, and is currently a professor at University of California Los Angeles. Jennifer’s work has been internationally recognized for pushing the boundaries of synesthetic and experiential artwork, particularly as our technological achievements and access increases.

The Billboard Creative (TBC) announced the debut of its first spring edition featuring artworks by three leading contemporary artists: Alex Prager, Jennifer Steinkamp, and Mona Kuhn. This exhibition is the first in a series of micro-initiatives aimed at keeping the mission of TBC activated throughout the year. These artists were selected for their unique dialogue with film and photography, two of the quintessential artistic mediums of Los Angeles. All three artists live and work in Los Angeles and play a vibrant role in the cultural community, fostering learning and supporting emerging artists. The artworks will be displayed on three prominent billboards across the city, with two billboards located in downtown Los Angeles, and another across from Paramount Studios in Hollywood. The goal of this exhibition, as with all TBC initiatives, is to broaden the reach of public art — transforming the streets of Los Angeles into an open-air museum, accessible to all. 

The billboards are on view the month of April 2017.

"SOUTHERN LANDSCAPES" opened at Brickworks Gallery, Atlanta, Saturday, March 11th, 2017. The exhibition was juried by me, Elizabeth Avedon, for South x Southeast Photomagazine Exhibitions. Having grown up in Texas, I'm all about "the South"; huge old moss covered oak tree's, swampy bayou's with coral snakes and water moccasins, guinea hens and alligators.... With this call to enter, I chose just a little bit of everything that felt like a Southern Landscape to me out of the over 700 images entered. Laura Adams and crew from Brickworks Gallery beautifully hung the final 60+ images Gallery-style.
