Photographer Gay Block began taking portraits in 1973 of her own affluent Jewish community in Houston, later expanding this to include South Miami Beach and girls at summer camp. In 2006, Block re-photographed the women who were girls in her 1981 series from Camp Pinecliffe, twenty-five years before. Block's photographs are included in museums and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, San Francisco MoMA and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

January 22, Block will present an overview of her career, talk about how her work as a portrait photographer has given her insight into life and love, and sign copies of her recently released Radius book, About Love. Photographs and Films 1973-2011 at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe .

"The Muralist Movement in this predominantly Latino neighborhood in San Francisco (the Mission District) involves an act of acceptance, sharing, validation and celebration –– an art form that can be easily traced back to Mayan and Aztec scenes painted on temple walls, or the caves of Lascaux. Many are highly politicized statements, whether celebrating indigenous cultures, protesting the wars in Central America, or honoring the fight for freedom in Nepal. Life and art are intertwined here, each mural with its own message inspired by the works of Mexican Muralists and motivated by the Civil Rights movement." "My fascination with the meaning and temporality of these murals, inspires me to help preserve what can easily disappear or become vandalized, while helping the muralist further disseminate their little-known histories to new and broader geographic audiences. Michael Crouser: A Mid-Career Retrospective

Michael Crouser's retrospective exhibition at New York's Leica Gallery includes work from four distinct series covering 25 years, Los Toros, Dog Run, Mountain Ranch and Sin Tiempo. Los Toros was a fifteen-year exploration of bullfighting in Spain, Mexico, South America and France. The collection was published as a monograph by Twin Palms, and won first place in the 2008 International Photography Awards, Fine Art Book category. Mountain Ranch was an exploration of the disappearing world of cattle ranching in the mountains of Colorado. This project was made possible through the generous support of Kodak. Dog Run was an experiment in seeing dogs in a new way...in the midst of their intense play in urban dog parks. Shot in Minneapolis and New York, Dog Run was published by Viking Studio, and was supported by Kodak. His series, Sin Tiempo, "without time" in Spanish, are fascinating "momentary vignettes giving no evidence of the photographs time or place." All the photographs in the exhibition were shot on Tri-X film and printed in a traditional darkroom.

New York City's Leica Gallery has been run in partnership with Leica Camera since 1994 and is closely linked to the company. The gallery has become a leading location for both traditional and modern photojournalism in the New York gallery scene; located in an historic building in Greenwich Village that is listed in the records of the American Institute of Architects.The gallery has housed more than 115 exhibitions, including renowned photographers such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Inge Morath, Leonard Freed, Alex Webb, Erich Hartmann, and Karl Lagerfeld.

"Memories Abandoned is a series of images of my now abandoned childhood home in Utah - portraits of my childhood experiences in the self same location with genuine artifacts of the experiences portrayed. Themes explored are the impermanence of time, the deterioration of memory and space, inevitability of change and through it all, resilience and the ability to move and exist beyond our surroundings. The project was partially funded by a cash award from the School of Visual Arts Office of Alumni Affairs, exhibited at Aqua Art/Art Basel Miami and featured in CMYK Magazine's 2010 Top 100 New Creatives Award, Issue 46."

"The concept was to make “fashionesque images” of the oldest in residence at the Dog Pound near my home (East 110th Street Animal Shelter, NYC). I asked for the dogs that were the “least likely to be adopted” and took their portraits to represent them with personality, youth and “edge” in order to aid their adoption. They were featured in PDNedu's Photo Annual & CMYK Aspiring Creatives Issue. 12 out of the 13 dogs I photographed were adopted."

Koinonia Farms was founded by Clarence Jordan in 1942 in Americus, Georgia as an interracial community where people could live and work. During the Civil Rights Movement, both black and white children from Koinonia were not allowed to attend segregated schools. Koinonia withstood firebombing, night riding, Klan intimidation, and economic boycotts. Koinonia still exists today as an interracial community, dedicated to affordable housing for all. Habitat for Humanity was founded at Koinonia in the 1960s as a response to poverty in the rural American South.

In 1970, Rainey Poole, 54, a one-armed sharecropper from Midnight, Mississippi, was beaten by a group of white men and dumped in the Sunflower River. Five men were arrested and charged with assault and murder. The charges were dropped. In 1999, the five were re-tried. Three were convicted of manslaughter, one pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and the other was acquitted.

On February 27, 1967, Wharlest Jackson, the treasurer of the local NAACP chapter, was killed by a car bomb left by Klansmen, shortly after he received a promotion to a position formerly reserved for whites. His son, Wharlest Jackson, Jr., heard the blast from his home nearby, and rushed to the scene to find his father dead in the road. No one has been convicted for this crime.

A Civil Rights Memorial

"Five years ago, I wandered downtown Montgomery in the sweltering heat, picked up a walking tour trail, and found myself facing a large, ornate fountain, situated on a brick pavilion. A Historical Marker said that I was standing on the former Court Square Slave Market, where slave traders sold men, women, and children to the highest bidder. It presented cold facts, detailing dollar values for slaves at the time and how none were given last names.

I was speechless. The fountain was erected at a time when this site was not considered for its history, the sign placed in a gesture of reconsideration. Moreover, the language printed on the sign was so void of sentiment – in no way testifying to the experience and meaning. I am from the American South, aware of the devastating history of slavery, but this site moved something in me that caught fire. I watched people pass by and wondered if they knew or thought of the history beneath their feet. Curious about other histories and sites (marked and unmarked) I may be passing by in the American South, I began to research." – Jessica Ingram read more

Donald Weber's Interrogations illustrates Weber's love for this temporary home of the ex-Soviet Union and the bureaucracies and inequalities that still exist and often impede "progress". It is presented in three chapters: Prologue, which shows some images of daily life; Interrogations, portraits of those confused, distressed and scared citizens being questioned by the authorities; and finishes with Epilogue by Larry Frolick and Donald Weber, text which further illustrates Frolick and Weber's love for the Russian citizens and their role in this project: "letting the denied tell their stories through you." The book is wrapped in a textured printed paper which mimics one of the wallpapers of the interrogation rooms and is stitched with one thread in the center. The uncut text block allows a play on design, the "creep" extends way beyond the cover. This element is clever design, but feels as though it may also be commentary on the character of those unseen in the second section. It is finished with a cardboard slipcase. So simple, but so intense.

Last year, Graciela Iturbide was able to actualize a long-awaited project with work she produced in Mexico City between 1974 and 2009 and Rome in 2007. Iturbide's images make Rome feel like Mexico. The book is a small perfect bound object printed on a warm paper and wrapped in gray cover with simple adhesive labels that Iturbide bought in Bolivia adorning the exterior of the back and front covers. Each label displays the title and photographer's name written with the photographer's hand. With her multiple personal touches, each book a unique object. This book is modest, unassuming and sweet.

I enjoy books that take me into areas of photography that I've not seen before and The First Photographers of Amsterdam 1845-1875 is a catalog of the exhibition with the same name held at the Amsterdam City Archives 1 April - 27 June 2010. There are many surprises here with documentary series of lock construction, a pink tea set decorated with photographs and the waxed paper negatives of Benjamin Brecknell Turner. Not an obvious choice but one I'll return to.

Sylvia Plachy's Out of the Corner of My Eye: de reojo, Goings On About Town

Although Sylvia Plachy didn't publish a book in 2011, her work remains timeless. Plachy, a Hungarian/American photographer, was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1943. Her family moved to New York City due to the Hungarian Revolution where she met photographer Andre Kertesz. Plachy's photo essays and portraits have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Village Voice, The New Yorker, Granta, Artforum, Fortune, and everywhere else. They have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Berlin, Budapest, Chicago, Minneapolis, New York, Paris and Tokyo. Her book, Self Portrait with Cows Going Home (2005), is a personal history of Central Europe with photographs and text, received a Golden Light Award for Best Book in 2004. In 2009, she received the Dr. Erich Salomon Preis in Berlin for Lifetime Achievement in Photojournalism. This January 2012, Plachy and Jeff Liao will be exhibiting Panoramic Photographs of New York City when The South Street Seaport Museum reopens.

"Mucalinda was a serpent king that emerged from the earth and protected Buddha with his hood from a storm. The book title is a metaphor of coming to terms with the multiplicity and the convergences of my life, an affirmation of the different moments which are represented in these self-portraits and portraits by other photographers."

"Self-reflection is reassurance for our psyche. French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan coined the term “the mirror stage,” which refers to early development in which an infant sees his own likeness, watches it move as he feels his body move, and thus realizes for the first time that he is the master of his own corporal form."

"Florence Nightingale, the civil war nurse, wrote that color, form and light provoke a physical effect on well-being. Photographers enter into that realm of light with their eyes and sensation. Photography can connect us to ‘oneness,’ and a ‘source.’ Research shows that photographs are recorded in the frontal lobe of the brain, which control heartbeat, blood flow, and hormones. This optic –unconscious relationship brings us visions of places yet to be discovered, universal, and yet rare. I experienced this kinship with my first camera, a Rollei, at the age of twenty at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico when Georgia O’Keeffe told me, “Let the powers out there guide you.” The impulse to snap the shutter directly links us to mythic absorption which is what the Mexican painter, Leonora Carrington named “down below.” She said if I wanted to heal from a breakup and grow as an artist I would “take the waters in San Jose Purua and Ixtapan or mushrooms in Palenque” to access things internal, archetypal, redeemable. – Linda Troeller, Mucalinda

Linda Troeller’s vast corpus of self-portraits spanning the length of her artistic career serve as testaments to the many faces that composite the idea of self. The compulsive remaking of her own image through the expanse of time (or timelessness) falls within the artist’s desire to inscribe her likeness on the visual field. "The three photographs of rangers are all holding tusks from elephants killed at the hands of man within the Amboseli/Tsavo ecosystem. The rangers in the photos are part of the team from BIG LIFE FOUNDATION, the non-profit organization I started in Sept 2010 in an effort to help try and halt the alarming and massive escalation of poaching in East Africa. So far, working within the Amboseli ecosystem of Kenya and Northern Tanzania, the Big Life teams have successfully dramatically reduced the level of poaching and other killings of animals in the region. Mona Kuhn, born in São Paulo, Brazil of German descent, now living in Los Angeles, spends her summers in the beautiful countryside near Bordeaux, France. In a house nestled in the pine forest, lit only by oil lamps and candles, she’s been photographing friends, family and friends of friends, nude in a small room for the past three years to create her latest work, Bordeaux Series.

I spoke with Mona about her new series and her experience working with preeminent photography publisher, Gerhard Steidl:

"With this idea of keeping the palette very classic, black and white and red, I thought the portraits also needed to be kept very simple. Traditional portraiture was a little scary to do because suddenly I’m competing with all the portraiture done before."

"I was a little worried because I had a lot of prints of nudes to show him and we were in the lobby of this hotel. I was thinking this is not going to work so well. In the past I have always shown him the work in a sequence, instead of showing in a box that you flip, flip, flip. I like sequencing it on a long table so you can look at each image and you can see how they communicate with each other. I talked to someone at the hotel to see if they had a conference room with a table we could just use for ten minutes. They didn’t!"

"The thing with Gerhard that is so insane, is that I dream of a book and that book is 100% of what I was dreaming. Jerry Atnip, a commercial and fine art photographer for over 35 years, was born in San Antonio and is now based in Nashville. He's spent the last few years traveling throughout the South exploring the back-roads and highways searching for the nuances that shape this unique part of the country. The thirty-nine images in his recently released book, Gone South: A Collection of Images from the American South (Nashville: CIA Publishing, 2011), are a part of a much larger body of work which includes scenes from Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Texas, on exhibit now at Nashville's Surroundings Gallery. Atnip describes the South in the introduction to the book as “a transitory area where the past and the present exist in a familiar tandem.

Gone South: A Collection of Images from the American South is available as both a regular trade book and as a Limited Edition (of 200 copies), which includes a signed and numbered print. Both can be ordered at JerryAtnip or CIA Creative.

"Jerry Atnip’s exhibition of photographs, Gone South: A Collection of Images from the American South, opened Friday evening at Nashville’s Surroundings Gallery...The ensemble of images, most of them moody black-and-white, a few dashes of color here and there, looks unplanned, as if stabbed on a bulletin board, so many snapshots, simple statements of the commonplace carefully saved. Railroad tracks, gulls, tree limbs against the sky and against each other, water in its many modes, a clapboard house, steps almost absorbed by the hill they climb, a tire swing hanging from a tree, and a timeless horse worthy of Paolo Uccello.

All respectful echoes as much of the South’s finest writers as of her photographers— Faulkner, Shelby Foote and Andrew Lytle as well as Eudora Welty, Walker Evans and Al Clayton. No axes to grind, nor politics to shout. No sound at all. Neither angst nor sermons. Just a dream-like serenity invoking nostalgia for times us older folks would like to pass on to the youngsters, but seldom succeed in doing.

Over thirty years of experience, Jerry Atnip’s photographic subjects include “people, architecture, corporate, music, travel” and, I expect, many other diverse subjects. Since 2002, he has won twenty-one awards in shows of various kinds, has mounted over seventy exhibitions in places as far-flung as Abu Dhabi, Paris, Geneva, Budapest, and throughout the U. S. Intuition precedes everything. When I look back at my first photographs taken around 12 years old, I'm surprised certain things are there so early in one's life. You have no idea where the hell it comes from.

WILLIAM CLIFT is recognized for his exquisite New Mexico landscapes, of Mont Saint-Michel, France, for documentation of our nation’s courthouses, the New York State Capitol in Albany, and the Hudson River Valley. Past publications include, Certain Places (1987), A Hudson Landscape (1993) and A Particular World (2008). He grew up on Boston's Beacon Hill and now lives with his family in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

As early as 10 years old, Clift was already working in his own darkroom from images he'd taken with his Brownie camera. He saved his money summer after summer caddying until he'd saved enough to purchase a Polaroid camera in 1956. As film was expensive, he was very careful to take only a very few images. Not taking quantities of pictures has seemingly become a habit that's lasted throughout his career.

At 12, he photographed the luminous image, Barbara's Table, Boston, Mass., 1956 (the frontispiece of his book, Certain Places) with his Poloroid. At 15, he took his first photography workshop with Paul Caponigro. He became the youngest member of the Association of Heliographers (named after the 1929 sun-imagery process) founded by Walter Chappell, along with Caponigro, Marie Cosindas, and a few other established photographers.

WILLIAM CLIFT's latest book, A Particular World, may be one of the most exceptional photography books of this decade. An assembly of 25 color photographs by William Clift taken with a Polaroid Spectra camera of his family and home.

Robert Clark is a freelance photographer based in NYC. Early in his career, Clark documented the lives of high-school football players in Odessa, Texas with author H. G. "Buzz" Bissenger, for the book Friday Night Lights. The book was a best seller and became a major motion picture and NBC television series.

In 2003, Anne Wilkes Tucker of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, brought Clark back to Texas to capture the first year of a new NFL team, the Houston Texans. The documentary and portraiture project resulted in one of the museum's most popular exhibits and the publication of a collectible, black-and-white photo book, First Down Houston: Birth of an NFL Franchise. Clark was the principle photographer for First Lady Hillary Clinton's book, An Invitation to the White House.

His coverage of the attack on the World Trade Center, witnessed from his rooftop in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, was recognized at the World Press Photo awards in Amsterdam. He also received a National Magazine Award for "Best Essay" for his National Geographic cover article, Was Darwin Wrong?

His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Time, Sports Illustrated, GEO, Vanity Fair, Stern, and Der Spiegel and graced some 40 book covers and more than a dozen National Geographic covers. Clark continues his association with National Geographic and is working on a book documenting the birth of the science of evolution. –Robert Clark website

Gary Cooper made almost a hundred films during his career as top box office star and won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 1942 for Sergeant York. That same year he was directed by Frank Capra in Meet John Doe (rent it!). Ingrid Bergman collaborated with Cooper on For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), based on Cooper's friend Ernest Hemingway's novel. He made a Western comedy, Along Came Jones (1945) and starred in the original version of the Ayn Rand novel, The Fountainhead (1949) with Patricia Neal. In 1953, Cooper won his second Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in High Noon.

In 1933, Cooper wed socialite Veronica Balfe, known as "Rocky," after several affairs with famous actresses and co-stars. Their only child, Maria, now Maria Cooper Janis, married classical pianist Byron Janis. As co-author of Gary Cooper: Enduring Style, Ms. Janis shared her parents personal photographs from their collection to create this (elegantly designed by Ruth Ansel) cloth-bound and slipcased album of 150 photographs. The Rev. Howard Castleberry, now rector at Christ Episcopal Church in Temple, Texas, was a former staff photographer for the Houston Chronicle. While on assignment in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1992, he shot a photograph of a man burying his daughter in the city soccer field turned makeshift graveyard. It was reported that 10,000 people a day were dying in Somalia with the ongoing civil war and subsequent famine that left the country in chaos. The city’s soccer field, along with the botanical gardens, had become a grave yard because the city had run out of burial space. This image earned Castleberry a Pulitzer Prize nomination, and won Picture of the Year and the Robert Kennedy Award for International Photojournalism.

Suffering has always been a part of humanity's condition, and always will be. How we react to this condition is the question. Perhaps my work in Somalia will call attention to the fact that we're all really wanting the same things - a warm bed, a full tummy - and that those with more might give from the heart to those with less. –The Rev. This photograph was selected by the Museum of Fine Arts Houston from more than a million images considered over the past seven years of curating for the future history of war photography exhibition. The prints in the show go from 1848 to the present and are taken on six continents. "The History of War Photography," curated by Anne Wilkes Tucker, will open in November 2012.

The first U.S. exhibition of 550 photographs from W.M. Hunt’s extraordinary collection opened at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. Selected works include photographs by Man Ray, Irving Penn, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Edward Steichen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Berenice Abbott, and Nadar in a range of formats from daguerreotype to digital. Highlights from the collection have previously been shown at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, France; the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland; and Foam-Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Thames & Hudson in the UK, Actes Sud in France and Aperture in the U.S. are simultaneously publishing his book, The Unseen Eye: Photographs From the W.M. Hunt Collection, to accompany the show.

[Paolo Ventura comes into the apartment during our talk. His exhibition The Automaton of Venice is at the Hasted Kraeutler Gallery through October 15 and he’s visiting for the day before returning to Italy. Ventura and Hunt discuss some 19th century photographs of nude women, prostitutes, Paolo saw in a flea market. Somebody had drawn beautiful masks to cover the eyes on the negatives.]

WM Hunt: The mask thing is a strange thing in the collection, because masks let the eyes in and this is very much about not letting the eyes in. For the show at the Eastman House I took out all the masks, so there are pictures in the book that aren’t going to be in the show.

My sister is the only one who’s seen all the different incarnations of this collection, so I’m curious to see what she thinks. This one will be really dense...read the full Interview here

WM Hunt: Gary Schneider was doing a talk at ICP one night, just beginning work on the Genetic Self-Portrait series, and he showed a slide of this diptych. (Retinas, from ‘Genetic Self-Portrait’, 1998) When the lecture was over, I made a beeline for him. I wanted it. It looks like this moonlit night in the haunted forest; it looks like a lot of things. I think it’s very exciting.

[In “The Unseen Eye,” W.M. Hunt writes: “This is part of Gary Schneider’s ambitious self-portrait series, based on the extraordinary conceit of appropriating X-rays of the interiors of his own eyes – this really is the ‘unseen eye’ – and then printing these in his exquisite and exacting fashion. This image is a haunted landscape of the soul under a full moon, eerie and rapturous.”]

I’ve known Gary a long time and think he’s a real talent. His skill as a printer always preceded him. He had a photograph of a friend of ours daughter, Fotofolio’s Julie Galant and Martin Bondells’ daughter, Anya, when she was about 8 or 10. I bought it. It’s a great, great picture now in the book. WHO IS MARVIN ISRAEL? is a short documentary on the life, work, and world of the enigmatic Marvin Israel (1924-1984), artist, designer, art director, and teacher. Israel's influence on Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Lee Friedlander, and many others is explored in the words of those who knew him. Directed by Neil Selkirk.
