Who We Are

Family Eldercare is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a continuum of professional services to seniors, caregivers and adults with disabilities in Central Texas. Family Eldercare’s mission is to help people live with dignity and independence in their own homes and community for as long as possible. To celebrate Family Eldercare’s 30th Anniversary and raise awareness of the changing and growing needs of older adults in Central Texas, Family Eldercare is sponsoring this Professional Photography Contest.

A Call For Entries

This contest is open to all photographers, and all forms of photographic expression are welcome. The contest will culminate in an exhibition and all winning selections will be included in an exhibition catalog. Photographers are encouraged to submit any image of an older adult, alone or with others, and in all stages of life. The judges will be especially interested in photographs that highlight the focus of Family Eldercare – images depicting the challenges facing older adults as well as images celebrating older adults leading dignified, independent and engaged lives.

The Awards

From all the entries submitted, the judges will first choose up to 30 Judges Selection Images to be Printed and Framed (at no cost to the winners) and displayed at the Family Eldercare Exhibition to open in September, 2012. The Judges Selection Images will all be featured in an Exhibition Catalog. From among those images, Judges will award: First Prize: $400 cash award, plus the winning image on cover of the Exhibition Catalog. Second Prize: $300 cash award. Third Prize: $200 cash award. Honorable Mention (2): $100 cash award. Best Submission from applicants 18 years of age and younger: $100 cash award. The contest submission closes on June 23, 2012.

SHAUN WHITE IN CHINA: Two-Time Olympic Snowboard Gold Medalist

Two-time Olympic Snowboard Gold Medalist, Shaun White, arrived in China for the first major snowboard contest of the 2010/2011 season - Air & Style Beijing - presented by Oakley and Shaun White. To kick-off his arrival, Burton Snowboards invited Shaun to meet some of Burton China's top Snowboarder's and Burton Snowboard distributor's from all across China, some traveling over a 1,000 miles to meet him. Everyone brought traditional gifts from their area of the country and Shaun graciously signed T-shirts, snowboards, and skateboards for everyone.

Air & Style Beijing, is Saturday in the Olympic Sports Center Stadium, Beijing, China. The first six-star TTR event of the season, which means not only will 16 riders be competing for a $100,000 dollar prize, and the glory that comes from an Air & Style win, they'll also be competing for 1,000 TTR World Ranking points. It’s the first major throw-down of the season with Scotty Lago, Peetu, Marco Grilc, i-Pod, Mikkel, Kazu, Seb Touts, Halldor and more… No matter what happens, it won't affect the rankings for the Dew Tour Dew Cup or the Burton Global Open series because those series haven't yet started. – read more on ESPN

Saul Leiter, presented by Howard Greenberg Gallery, represents the first solo show of the artist’s early black and white photography from the 1940s and 50s, focus's on more than 40 images including many unique prints that have never before been exhibited. Leiter made an enormous and unique contribution to photography with a highly prolific period in New York City in the 1940s and 50s. His abstracted forms and radically innovative compositions have a painterly quality that stands out among the work of his New York School contemporaries. Well-known for his color work, Leiter’s earliest black and white photographs also show an extraordinary affinity for the medium. His distinctive imagery stems from his profound and touching response to the dynamic street life of New York City. This show includes the artist’s iconic street photography and intimate portraits of friends and family.

The exhibition coincides with the publication of "Saul Leiter: Early Black and White" a two-volume monograph published by Steidl / Howard Greenberg Library, a new imprint at Steidl. With text by Max Kozolff and an additional essay by Jane Livingston, the volumes show the impressive range of Leiter’s early photography.

ADAM MAGYAR, now living in Berlin, was born in Debrecen, Hungary. Magyar, Jeffris Elliott and 4 other photographers won the 2009 Photography Now PQ #99 contest. Debra Klomp Ching, co-owner of KLOMPCHING GALLERY was Juror. Their work will be published in issue #99 of Center for Photography at Woodstock's PQ Magazine. Magyar's work has won several other awards, including the 2009 International Photography Awards 1st Place in Fine Art/Collage for Squares and 1st Place in Special/Aerial for Squares, 2006-2007 Josef Pecsi Scholarship and the Hungarian Press Photo Grand Prize in 2004. I asked Magyar about this series:

Can you give a short detail of how you arrived at this project?
I like to work with simple, real and obvious matters like pedestrians. I started experimenting with different digital techniques, because I did not find places that I wanted to see in my images. I wanted to depict people in endless and seamless environments, without recognizable or particular surroundings. The images are really detailed, you can see a lot of tiny things if you go close to them.

Did you set up the people in the image #517?
In a sense I did. All the squares are artificially set up from hundreds of images that I took from about 4-5 meters high of pedestrians on sidewalks. This distance, or rather, closeness allows me to create extremely high-resolution images, thus allowing the viewer to survey each person close-up. Yet, observing the image at close range makes it possible for us to see it as a whole, while looking at it from a distance results in losing all the details.

What do I think Photo Books will look like in ten years? Considering how fast technology is evolving, I think we can't begin to imagine the form they will take by then. Ten years is light years in technological time. I do think whatever method used to create Photo Books, hand crafted like Raymond Meeks or printed in awesome gravure like Twin Palms, photography books in any form will still have a collectible market. I'm designing a book for a Philanthropic Organization as a beautiful gift give-away to their donors. This will be my first foray into the world of print on demand publishing. I've decided on using Blurb. My former photo-eye colleague, Radius Books co-founder, Darius Himes, was lead judge for Blurb's recent 2009 Photography Book Now contest and Flak Photo has partnered with Blurb to feature 25 of the award-winning photographer's books from 2009 as well. I'll post about my first-time experience using their design templates here in a couple of months. My Book Design Website

The current Book Design software, Quark and InDesign, "have never been easier to create professional pages," but at what cost. I was lamenting the loss of an actual physical book dummy, until I posted my original layouts for "PORTRAITS", published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. I started to wistfully describe what was involved in creating a mechanically correct book dummy and became overwhelmed with how difficult and time consuming it sounded and the text became unmanageably long, so I deleted it. After the exhausting description, I promise never to yell at Quark for crashing my computer again. However annoying, losing a couple of hours of work is nothing compared to just waiting around for a week for the first set of galleys from the Typesetter and Photostats (look it up!) to arrive.

Catastrophe in the Gulf: The Hot Zone

A former Contributing Photographer with Life Magazine, Andy Levin began his career as a staff photographer for the Black Star agency in 1985, where he completed contract assignments for magazines including National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, and Fortune. In 1983 Levin’s photo essay for Life won first place in the prestigious National Press Photographers Association Contest. His personal black and white work on Coney Island has been published in both Reportage and Graphis as well as both Life and Popular Photography. A participant in over fifteen Day in the Life book projects, A Day in the Life of America brought him to New Orleans where he photographed the Charity Hospital Emergency Room. In 2004 Levin moved to Big Easy to document and participate its rich culture.

Just a year later the city was decimated by Hurricane Katrina which Levin photographed while helping his neighbors to safety. Levin’s post Katrina work has been published in the New York Times, Newsweek, US News, GQ, Rolling Stone, USN&WR and People Magazines and Time Magazine. In 2007 he was a finalist for the Eugene Smith Grant for a project entitled “World By the Water” documenting areas of the world that are on the front-lines of global climactic change. – Lightstalkers
