"For the last few months I have been inviting people to visit my apartment and allow me to photograph them in a very intimate space; my bathroom. I have also been inviting them to take a shower as I continue to shoot them. I soon came to the observation that warm water running over my subjects bodies often relieved them of any unnerving awkwardness the camera brought about. Once they were relaxed, the bathroom, formerly a beauty parlour, now became a confessional and I the hair dresser. Many of my subjects shared intimate details of their life with me and every new person in the shower became a brand new allegory."

I was first introduced to Manjari Sharma by Mary Virginia Swanson, at MVS's inspiring lecture at ASMP/NY last fall. I loved Manjari's "Shower Series" and also the Portfolio, Water and India series on her website. Sharma moved to the U.S. from India in 2001 to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio, then moved back to India to travel and photograph. She then moved to NYC in 2007, where she's been shooting for AOL, Penguin Books, and others, as well as exhibiting her personal work. Manjari has been selected to present her portfolio for the prestigious Review Santa Fe 2010.

After meeting Photojournalist Jason Florio at last year's Review Santa Fe, I posted some photographs (on 9.15.09) from his project Makasutu: Mecca In The Forest, now on sale on Blurb Books, and my favorite quote of his which covers everything you might find about his work.

I have been arrested by the Taliban...ridden into far-flung Afghan valleys in search of nomads with mujahideen as my security, dressed as a woman to cross a border, was at the foot of the Twin Towers as they collapsed, enjoyed the 'comforts' of a Cuban hospital, hunted bats in Surinam, chatted with Somali pirates over Coke and biscuits and danced like a fiend in Beirut nightclubs...among other things.

Jason, and his partner,
Photography & Expedition Producer Helen Jones, made a 930km walk around The Gambia last year. You can view (and purchase) portraits he made along the route here: 930km African Odyssey

The NYPD released 215 photographs of women taken in the 1970's by a convicted serial killer now on Death Row in California. The photographer, who studied film under Roman Polanski, had over a 1,000 pictures in a storage locker when he was arrested. Releasing the photographs may help crack several cold cases.

"They should be in every newspaper, on TV and on the Internet," said Sheila Weller, a cousin of one of his victims. View Photos Here.

Furtemba Sherpa, World Tour Cyclist

"My name is Furtemba Sherpa, a Global Citizen. Originally, I am from a small village called Sankuasabha in Nepal. At the age of 26, I started world cycle tour with the cause of "World Peace and Environmental Protection." Since 2003, I had been cycling to 46 countries and intend to cycle 150 countries all together which should be done by 2020."

Furtemba Sherpa is the great-grandson of Tenzing Norgay, who first reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Sir Edmund Hillary. Conquering the Himalayas has been considered by most Sherpas in Nepal as the pinnacle of success, but Furtemba is embarking on his dream to become the first Sherpa to cycle around the globe to promote his message of World Peace and Environmental Protection.

CARLAN TAPP: Question Of Power

"Four Corners Power Plant, Shiprock, New Mexico. Over 15 million tons of chemical toxins are released into the air each year in the Four Corners Area. Living in the shadow of the nation’s dirtiest power plants the Dine´ People suffer from respiratory disease and cancer from the pollution laden air, soil, and water. A new proposed coal burning power plant, Desert Rock, will seriously add to local and global problems." Photograph © Carlan Tapp/ All rights reserved

"Alice Gilmore stops to rest at her young sister’s grave site. She has been told by the Dine´ Power Authority that her father long ago signed over all their grazing permits to the strip mine. The DPA refuses to show her written records. Her family burial areas, home, and grazing lands will all be destroyed by the new strip mine." Photograph © Carlan Tapp/ All rights reserved

"Many Navajos must drive, on average, 50 miles round trip three to four times a week for their personal water and for their livestock supply since much of existing livestock water has been contaminated by mining activities." Photograph © Carlan Tapp/ All rights reserved

Question of Power
Coal: The social cost of Electricity in America

Carlan Tapp began his photo essay Question of Power in 2005. His project uses traditional photographic documentary techniques of reportage, portraiture, and landscapes, with the addition of recorded audio interviews. Question of Power are stories and voices of individuals, families, and communities affected by the mining, processing, burning, and storage of waste materials created by coal for this generation of electricity in America.
