Deadline to Apply extended to November 1, 2020

The John Chervinsky Emerging Photographer Scholarship seeks to recognize, encourage and reward photographers with the potential to create a body of work and sustain solo exhibitions. Awarded annually, the Scholarship provides recipients with a monetary award of $3,000, exhibition of their work at the Griffin Museum of Photography, and a volume from John’s personal library of photography books. The Scholarship seeks to provide a watershed moment in the professional lives of emerging photographers, providing them with the support and encouragement necessary to develop, articulate and grow their own vision for photography.

"The scholarship is open to photographers who have produced individual works of photography and/or are in the process of producing bodies of work. We are looking for candidates who are serious about photography, whose potential is emerging and whose photography will benefit from this scholarship. Candidates can be currently enrolled in a photography degree program if in their graduating year.  There is no age limit. There are no residency requirements. There is no application fee.

Photographers without gallery representation who have not exhibited solo in a commercial gallery, academic gallery (except for thesis shows), galleries in organizations like the Griffin Museum, Houston Center for Photography, Center for Fine Art Photography etc. or a museum setting or have not received significant (over $3000) grant funding are eligible (coffee shop, community gallery, library, academic thesis exhibitions, etc. are eligible exhibition settings). Past awardees of the Chervinsky Scholarship, paid employees of the Griffin Museum or their immediate families, Griffin Museum board members and jurors’ immediate families and those immediate families of Griffin board members or jurors’ paid employees are not eligible.

This scholarship is not for well-established photographers. Well-established photographers are individuals in mid-photography-careers and are seen by the public and peers as distinguished in the field of photography and have many accomplishments as a photographer.  Of note, receiving a Fulbright Scholarship would disqualify a candidate from receiving this scholarship. Producing a published (by a publisher) photo book would disqualify a candidate from receiving this scholarship. Self publishing does not disqualify a candidate." "Peeling back the layers I see beyond the boundaries of the ordinary. Discovering pieces of my life that were overlooked or hidden. I want to  know what my head hid from my heart. My art gives my lungs room to breathe, my heart freedom to flutter, and my mind space to dream."

I met Anna LaBenz at the 2016 PhotoNola Portfolio Reviews. She recently graduated with a Master's of Fine Art degree in Photography from Maine Media College. Her background began in the high desert plains of Wyoming where she grew up and now lives in a beautiful mountain town in northern Arizona. She is inspired by the dramatic landscape of Arizona, her life experiences, and those who are closest to her and is currently working on large scale installations.

When rainfall quenches the bone-dry terrain of Southern Niger, says New York-based travel photographer Terri Gold, a thousand Wodaabe nomads, along with thousands of their treasured animals, coverage across the desert in celebration of the The Guérewol Festival. As part of the weeklong event, the men dress in traditional finery, adorn their faces in paint, and perform for hours in hopes of winning the admiration of a set of young women judges. After braving the 110 degree heat in search of the merrymaking, Gold at last happened upon Guérewol after weeks of anticipation. read more...

 PHOTOLUCIDA

Photolucida is an arts nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to provide platforms that expand, inspire, educate and connect the regional, national, and international photography community.

Every other April, an international set of photographers and reviewers gather in Portland, Oregon for a five-day celebration of photography that includes lectures, workshops, and exhibition collaborations. Intensive portfolio reviews are at the heart of the festival. Reviewers are selected for their experience, involvement, and commitment to advancing the work of emerging and mid-career artists. Over the years, many participants have made contacts that have led directly to exhibitions, publications, and sales, in addition to receiving useful critiques.

By providing a venue for in-depth, informed, and supportive dialogue between photographers, gallery owners, curators, publishers, editors, and consultants, Photolucida promotes the culture of photography locally, nationally, and internationally. The next Portfolio Reviews Festival will take place April, 2017.

"Children generally know whom to trust, especially those who´ve experienced hardships. Monika Merva brought empathy and compassion as well as skill to this project and we can feel it in the children's responses. They allowed her into their private spaces and she's honored their trust with vivid, memorable portraits." –Anne Wilkes Tucker, Curator of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
"Monika Merva, a first generation American of Hungarian descent, has spent almost a decade visiting and photographing the children of Gyermekközpont in Hungary for this, her first monograph. Her photographs of the children are vivid and personal, the pacing of the rich, color images has a comfortably varied formal character. Though the cultural divide between the democratic West and former Soviet bloc countries seems almost unbreachable at times, Merva's images do so slowly — without obscuring their cultural specificity, they form a potent bridge between the viewer and subject."–photo-eye Books

"A Portrait of America Left Behind is a photographic study that I have been conducting over the past two years. The photographs represent the presence that humanity plays on the land even when they are not in view. The objects and buildings that we create for our needs, and our discarding when they are not. Zig-zagging my way thru 13 states, 15,000 miles over 3 trips, 2 months and 100’s of hours in my darkroom it has yet come to an end."

Review 2010 Organizers, Photographers Stephen Mallon and Susan May Tell

My experience at the American Society of Media Photographers / New York REVIEW 2010: Fine Art Portfolio Review was excellent. It was a great platform for photographers to network with over 40 Reviewers that included industry insiders such as Fine Art Consultant Mary Virginia Swanson, Editors from PDN (Photo District News), Gallery Owners, Director's, Curator's and Photo Agents. I was impressed with the high level of work and creative presentations. I came away with many photographers to keep in contact with and profile here in the future. There were also a couple of very successful professionals there to show their new work (Lynn Goldsmith!!!), as well as a few first time students. Thank you to all the photographers:

(Blogspot is acting crazy and insists on making these names GIGANTIC...check out their links anyway)

And thank you to ASMPNY's former President, Stephen Mallon and ASMPNY Fine Art Chair, Susan May Tell, for including me! A lot of great people from ASMP/NY worked to produce this event, Calumet Photo hosted the space and WagMag donated Pernod for the after party!
