A 'portal' can be an architectural feature (gate, window, doorway, mirror, tunnel) that frames or isolates or adds dimension to an image. In a fictional sense, a portal can become a magical doorway through time and space. Alone or in combination, they hold unlimited creative possibilities for photographers. For this exhibit, we're looking for images that use these devices in intriguing ways.

BLACK+WHITE Call For Entry : Curated by Elizabeth Avedon

First Light © Sean Perry

Mahavodi Temple, Bodhgaya, India © Nicholas Vreeland

Black and white photography still holds a place in my heart; it holds an incomparable mystique and mood. Actually film star Ginger Rogers said something like that, but I am of the same opinion. Canadian photojournalist Ted Grant said, “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!” I’m not sure that is an actual fact, but I like his point of view. – Elizabeth Avedon

I’m looking for entries on all subject matter, real or illusive, unpredictable or expected, complicated or plain, in black + white.

AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY ARCHIVES

ACCEPTED BY MARY ENGEL

THE SPOTLIGHT AWARD

PRESENTED BY JUDITH THOMPSON

Mary Engel Photo © Andrew French

The American Photography Archives Group (APAG) is 501(c)(3) non-profit that is a resource organization for individuals who own or manage a privately held photography archive. Collectively, the group has dealt with everything from archival supplies and copyright infringement to working with photo dealers. Mary Engel will accept the award for APAG. APAG began when founder and president, Mary Engel, assumed responsibility for the archive of her mother, photographer and filmmaker Ruth Orkin. It was a difficult task, with much to learn about intellectual property rights, conservation and preservation, promotion, and the world of photography galleries and dealers. Mary has gained a wealth of knowledge and know-how, and when her father, photojournalist and filmmaker Morris Engel, passed away in 2005, she inherited his archive as well. Over the years, Mary reached out to others who were in a similar situation and became an informal consultant. As her network of fledgling archive managers grew, so did the demands on her time. She realized that everyone could benefit from each other’s experience, so she started organizing meetings. At first the group was small enough to meet over dinner in a restaurant. Soon, however, more people joined, and a larger, quieter meeting space was needed. Mary arranged for the group to meet at ICP, and the organization has became more structured, holding meetings three or four times a year.

Judith Thompson

Judith Thompson is the Director of the Harold Feinstein Photography Trust. In that role she works to preserve and promote the legacy of her late husband, Harold Feinstein who was awarded the Living Legend Award by the Griffin Museum in 2011. Like others who have inherited the estate of a well known artist, she has been on a steep learning curve and credits APAG and Mary Engel for providing crucial support and guidance. For nearly three decades prior to her current responsibilities she worked in the field of reconciliation and social healing running organizations and speaking worldwide. She has a Ph.D. in peace studies and was a former Peace Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard.

MICHAEL O'BRIEN: The Picture Review Conversation Series • Austin, Texas

"On More Than a Picture"
The Picture Review In Conversation with

In our continuing series of talks on the process, craft and life of working in the visual arts, The Picture Review team is thrilled to announce that nationally renowned documentary and portrait photographer, Michael O’Brien, will be joining us In Conversation "On More Than a Picture, A Conversation with Michael O’Brien and Sean Perry" May 16th, 2015.

From his biography, “Michael O’Brien is one of the country’s premier portrait photographers. In a career that has spanned four decades, O’Brien has photographed subjects ranging from presidents to small-town heroes. His candid, unapologetic style captures the dignity and humanity of his subjects, whether they be celebrities or ‘ordinary’ people.”

Mr. O’Brien’s images have appeared in numerous magazines, including Life, Esquire, National Geographic, Fortune, the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Texas Monthly, Vanity Fair and the London Sunday Times. He has twice been the recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Award for outstanding coverage of the disadvantaged. O’Brien is the author of two books: The Face of Texas, 2003 and 2014, and Hard Ground in 2011, a collaboration that presents O’Brien's compassionate portraits with poetry by artist and musician Tom Waits.

Eighteen of Mr. O’Brien’s images have been selected for inclusion in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., five of which were recently featured in The Face of Texas exhibition at The Wittliff Collections: Willie Nelson, George Strait, Judge William Wayne Justice, Larry McMurtry, and Harvey Penick with Bud Shrake. His photographs are also held in the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography in NYC, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and The Wittliff Collection of Mexican and Southwestern Photography at Texas State University.

Our presentation includes rarely seen pictures from his early work and we will have the wonderful opportunity to preview images from his newest title, The Great Minds of Investing. Mr. O’Brien will also be demonstrating a few of his techniques for working with light and a book signing will follow.

To celebrate our special guest, we are pulling out all the stops with our first ever May Fair, featuring the Spring TPR Team's Light + Sound exhibition of large-scale prints, the debut of the ACCMe Studios photo booth, refreshments and a plethora of surprises and delights!

We look forward to seeing you there!

THE PICTURE REVIEW: Kate Breakey In Conversation With Sean Perry

Sean Perry In Conversation With Kate Breakey
on the Process, Craft and Life of Working in the Visual Arts

Thursday, February 19, 2015
6:30 PM to 9:00 PM (CST)
 Austin Community College

“I begin with a silver photographic image, a kind of evidence. Then I paint on this in many transparent layers of oil paint and pencil. If I am lucky, the media combine and become enmeshed, a curious union of what was real with my own exaggerations and embellishments, so I can show how beautiful it all is—the light, the form, the texture, and color—because I am a sensualist, and this is my deepest pleasure, my lovely addiction.” —Kate Breakey

Austin, Texas: For our ongoing In Conversation series, The Picture Review team is thrilled to host the singular and exceptional Kate Breakey, for what is sure to be a most inspired evening. We will be discussing the committed work of being an artist, and the remarkable career she has built doing so. Ms. Breakey is internationally recognized for her large-scale, richly hand-colored photographs, including her acclaimed series of luminous portraits of birds, flowers, animals, and insects. Since 1980, her work has appeared in more than ninety, one-person exhibitions and more than fifty group exhibitions in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, China, New Zealand, and France.

A native of South Australia who has also lived and worked in Texas, Ms. Breakey now resides and photographs in the desert outside Tucson. Her work has been beautifully represented in five books, including Birds/Flowers published in 2002 by Eastland Books and Slowlight published by Etherton Gallery in 2012. She has produced three substantial monographs in collaboration with The Wittliff Collections and the University of Texas Press, beginning with Small Deaths (2001), followed by Painted Light (2010) a career retrospective that encompasses a quarter century of prolific image making, and Las Sombras/The Shadows (2012) which is comprised of many hundreds of images, from a bald eagle to tiny moths and flies. This series is a continuation of her lifetime investigation of the natural world which in her own words is "brimming with fantastic mysterious beautiful things."

Her latest landscape work – Out of Darkness was showcased in a recent exhibition with photographer Keith Carter entitled Without and Within, these deeply felt landscapes becoming a metaphor for dramatic personal events that have recently changed her life. Ms. Breakey's work is held in many public institutions including the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University in San Marcos, the Austin Museum of Art, the Australian National Gallery in Canberra and the Osaka Museum in Osaka, Japan. This summer she will return to the prominent Santa Fe Workshops to lead a special course in The Hand-Colored Photographic Print, July 12th – July 17, 2015. – Sean Perry

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015: Things Won and Lost

Things Won and Lost  Photograph © Sean Perry

To begin the New Year 2015, I've chosen from photographer and contributor Sean Perry, Things Won and Lost from his series Fairgrounds. Perry was selected as a finalist for the Hasselblad Masters award for this work, including his limited edition book, Fairgrounds (published by Cloverleaf Press).

Perry's imagery is hallmarked by wrapping diverse subjects in his particular quality of light, releasing a simple expression of a given object's unexpected nature and grace. That voice is further refined by his dedication to the darkroom and alchemy used to breathe life and light into his prints. "I work hard to be known for my printing," he says. "I take great pride in it, and hope when someone sees one of my images, they would instantly identify the craft and thumbprints of being mine. It's why I sign them that way, the inked thumbprint next to my name - a metaphor that my hands have made this." read more here

A limited-edition print by Sean Perry

...presented in a deluxe folio, a collaboration between Sean Perry; book-artists Kaoru Yoshida and Jace Graf of Cloverleaf Studio, Austin, TX; and Friends Without A Border founder, Kenro Izu

 "Friend"

17th Annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction

During a series of photography trips to Cambodia's Angkor Wat monuments, internationally acclaimed photographer Kenro Izu was deeply affected by his encounters with often ill, malnournished, and disfigured children. As a symbol of his gratitude for the profund artistic inspiration he received from Cambodia's historical treasures, Izu committed himself to building a pediatric hospital to provide desperately needed healthcare for its children...its future.

Friends Without A Border, a non-profit organization, was founded by Izu in 1996 to build and manage Angkor Hospital for Children in Cambodia. In 2013, Friends launched a new initiative to extend the reach of the mission to the children of Lao PDR by building and establishing Lao Friends Hospital for Children; slated to open in the spring of 2015.

The Sunday Find – Tom Baril, Botanica

This week in my classes we looked at the mighty Tom Baril and his two masterfully produced books – Botanica, published by Arena Editions in 2000, and Tom Baril, his seminal monograph published by 4AD in 1997. Both titles are lush and decadent, rich tri-tone reproductions of his gorgeous, gorgeous prints alongside elegant typography, each seductively designed and simply perfect.

These are relatively scarce books, long out of print and often expensive. You will find a copy of Botanica at photo-eye Bookstore, or you can check on eBay, but I have often scored great books by hunting for under-subscribed listings. Be careful, check the seller, do your due diligence and all of that jazz…. For myself, anything under $50.00 would be a steal, the book often trades for $100.00 plus. Edited by Mr. David Fahey and designed by Ms. Elsa Kendall, the boards are covered with smokey moss green cloth, having almost gold highlights. Endpapers are fantastic gray moss. The color palette against the 60 plates of toned photographs is exquisite. Only one printing, by EBS in Verona Italy, 132 pages.

Born in 1952, Tom Baril graduated from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and for near 20 years served as Robert Mapplethorpe’s master printer. Few can match the presence and sheer alchemy his prints express. I am so thankful to have seen a great many in person and he remains one of my deepest influences. His work is wide ranging, spanning the urban environment, seascapes, botanical and figure studies. I love his amalgamation of tradition and discovery, the excellence with craft and vision across many mediums – in printmaking, the portfolio form and book-arts. I rarely see interviews with Mr. Baril, though there is a little jewel of a find in an extended audio conversation with Mr. Jensen at the esteemed publication, LensWork.

Additionally, HPB has a few juicy member coupons hitting this week.... 30% off one item Friday and Saturday and 50% off one item on Sunday. I have my choices earmarked, I suggest you do the same! Just tonight I saw Louis Faurer, Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, Michael O’Brien, Robert Adams and Larry Clark. Make sure you are on the mailing list for the coupons – if you find yourself in need, email me and I will be happy to send. Seek these fine titles out, perhaps one waiting for you with an egregious Sunday discount…. that would be just delightful would it not?

My best to you always, Sean Perry

SEAN PERRY: Graciela Iturbide - No Hay Nadie, The Sunday Find

"Mujer ángel, Desierto de Sonora, Mexico 1979"
Photograph (c) Graciela Iturbide

The Sunday Find – Graciela Iturbide by Sean Perry

Graciela Iturbide (b.1942) is a powerful rarity, a truly soulful photographer and master from Mexico City. I first discovered her work through another inspired artist I hold in the highest regard, the venerable Mr. William D. Wittliff. Her exhibition (and monograph), Eyes to Fly With at his namesake collection in San Marcos was simply stellar. You can see (and I insist you must!) her deeply poetic black and white prints held in the formidable permanent collection there – the largest institutional holdings of her work in the United States. Acquiring the exceptional book that was published alongside the exhibition by University of Texas Press and The Wittliff Collections is certainly worthy of your efforts, it remains a faithful friend and one I return to often.

I find her pictures otherworldly and mystic, deftly transposed from the subconscious ether. They ask me to look again and again, to reassess the many layers of what I think I have seen or remembered. With each visit I am rewarded with something new, and for the moment another small wonder untwined. She describes herself as an actress and her photographs "a companion to the reality of the situation." The eldest of 13 children, she developed an early interest in photography inspired by her father. While studying filmmaking and scriptwriting at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in the early 1970's, she met Manuel Alvarez Bravo – an apprenticeship would follow, inspiriting a new discovery of her homeland through picture making. In addition to winning the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Prize for Photography (1987), the Gran Prix Mois (1988) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1988), Ms. Graciela was honored in 2008 with the Hasselblad Foundation award.

"Graciela Iturbide is considered one of the most important and influential Latin American photographers of the past four decades. Iturbide has extended the concept of documentary photography, to explore the relationships between man and nature, the individual and the cultural, the real and the psychological. She continues to inspire a younger generation of photographers in Latin America and beyond." – Hasselblad Foundation, 2008

"Take a poetic journey with Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide as she imparts the personal and cultural themes that inform her artistic vision and thread throughout her work. Filmmaker Alejandro Gómez de Tuddo follows Iturbide as she reveals her heart--from the religious legends she holds dear; to her regard for the dead "angelitos" or little  angels of the cemetery; and her esteem for the virtues of St. John of the Cross's Solitary Bird: he flies only at great heights, tolerates no one's company, juts out his beak into the wind, and sings gently. In Spanish with English subtitles." – Video

No Hay Nadie, There is No-One (La Fabrica, 2011)

I am delighted to share with you today a most exquisite little find, the beautifully produced No Hay Nadie, There is No-One by Ms. Graciela. Published by La Fabrica in 2011, it is 68 pages with 25 sumptuous tritone plates of black and white images made between 1997 and 2010. Photographing across cities mostly in the north of India, this work encompasses Varanasi, Delhi, Benares, Bombay, and Calcutta. It also includes the essay Appearances Don't Deceive by Óscar Pujol.

Royal red cloth boards with inky black endpapers and wrapped image around center, cover to back. Handsomely typeset in Janson Text and Benton Sans, this mint example is still shrink wrapped – first edition in a limited first printing of only 2000 copies.

Direct from La Fabrica for 35.00€ ($55.00 List), it is available exclusively to The Sunday Find for $14.44, at the North Lamar HPB location in Austin, Texas. The first to ask for it at the checkout counter has it, held under the name 'Silver'. Friends outside of Texas might find it at other Half Price Books locations, as well as the usual online bibliophile speakeasies. It is a lovely book, well designed and richly printed, a noble addition to your collection for a mere song.

Until next time I leave you with this subtle, elegant quote from the artist herself:

“I look for surprise in ordinary things that I could have found anywhere in the world. The unconscious obsession that we photographers have is that wherever we go we want to find the theme that we carry inside ourselves.”  – Graciela Iturbide

No Hay Nadie, There is No-One (La Fabrica, 2011)
