When rainfall quenches the bone-dry terrain of Southern Niger, says New York-based travel photographer Terri Gold, a thousand Wodaabe nomads, along with thousands of their treasured animals, coverage across the desert in celebration of the The Guérewol Festival. As part of the weeklong event, the men dress in traditional finery, adorn their faces in paint, and perform for hours in hopes of winning the admiration of a set of young women judges.  PHOTOLUCIDA

Photolucida is an arts nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to provide platforms that expand, inspire, educate and connect the regional, national, and international photography community.

Every other April, an international set of photographers and reviewers gather in Portland, Oregon for a five-day celebration of photography that includes lectures, workshops, and exhibition collaborations. Intensive portfolio reviews are at the heart of the festival. Reviewers are selected for their experience, involvement, and commitment to advancing the work of emerging and mid-career artists. Over the years, many participants have made contacts that have led directly to exhibitions, publications, and sales, in addition to receiving useful critiques.

By providing a venue for in-depth, informed, and supportive dialogue between photographers, gallery owners, curators, publishers, editors, and consultants, Photolucida promotes the culture of photography locally, nationally, and internationally. The next Portfolio Reviews Festival will take place April, 2017.

THE CENTER FOR FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
International Call for Entries | Illuminate with Juror Elizabeth Avedon

THEME | Illuminate: All types of subject matter, capture types and photographic processes are eligible to submit. Eligibility: Our calls for entry are open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate.

HONORS | AWARDS: All selected artists are invited to join us at the reception with Elizabeth Avedon. An international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and other advocates of fine art photography will view the chosen artist’s work throughout the exhibition. Each participant is included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition in Fort Collins, Colorado and Online Gallery exhibition. Juror’s Selection: $500.00. Director’s Selection: $250.00. Two LiveBooks Website Awards: Valued at $399 from liveBooks. Honorable Mention Awards: 2-year membership and image submission to a Call for Entry at C4FAP.

In addition artists’ selected for the exhibition will also receive: Promotion on The Center’s large social media platforms. Professional installation images for your use. All exhibiting artists’ are invited to complimentary portfolio reviews with the Director, Hamidah Glasgow, lunch and portfolio sharing on the reception weekend. In-gallery and online exhibition with links to artists’ websites Press releases are sent to artists’ choice of media outlets.

Myles Little is an award-winning photo editor at TIME magazine with extensive experience in print, web and curation. He has produced documentary photography by Tomas van Houtryve and Peter van Agtmael; photo illustrations by Chris Buck and Alexander Crispin; portraits by Laura Pannack and Paolo Verzone; and still-lifes by Jamie Chung and Grant Cornett.

Outside of TIME, Little curated an exhibit of documentary photography about wealth inequality. After two years of work, it's traveling to 5 countries and counting (China, UAE, Nigeria, Bosnia and Wales). Included are some of the best photographers in the world, like Christopher Anderson, Nina Berman, Michael Light and David Chancellor. Nobel Prize-winning economist, Joseph Stiglitz, is writing an essay for the book; and Geoff Dyer, National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author, is also writing an essay. The 5 exhibitions are fully funded.


Recently, a major European publisher named Hatje Cantz has offered to make a book with the work. But, as is often the case with publishing these days, he will need to contribute part of the funding to cover the costs of production, so he launched a Kickstarter campaign to help make that happen. I was honored to be this year's juror for  the 2015 National Competition for the Soho Photo Gallery. Paul Kessel's somber beauty "Entering The Metropolitan Opera" is the First Place winner. His image stayed with me like the atmosphere of a 70's era Winogrand scene. For 2nd Place, I chose Yorgos Efthymiadis’s "Net" from his "Letting My Guard Down" body of work for it's serene, solitary empty space and color. 3rd Place, I was deeply drawn into the unusual landscape by artist Mark Roussel from his series "Finding and Losing My Father." All Honorable Mentions; Ben Altman, Sheri Lynn Behr, Jennifer McClure, and Robert Moran, along with all the photographs accepted into the exhibition, represent my interest and love for fine art photography as well as portraiture, landscape, street and travel work...read more HERE

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were named to a committee to prepare a declaration of independence. Jefferson (standing) did the actual writing because he was known as a good writer. Congress deleted Jefferson's most extravagant rhetoric and accusations.

 2015 Juried National Photography Competition

Soho Photo Gallery initiated its first juried National Photo Competition in 1995 and it has been an annual event ever since. Each year, the Gallery receives hundreds of entries from photographers all over the United States. I was honored to be this year's juror.

I want to thank everyone who entered the 2015 National Competition for the Soho Photo Gallery. It was a difficult task to edit many great images out, but there were only 40 spaces and over 2000 images. At first glance, I never wavered from my choice of Paul Kessel's somber beauty "Entering The Metropolitan Opera" as the First Place winner. It stayed with me like the atmosphere of a 70's era Winogrand scene. For 2nd Place, I chose Yorgos Efthymiadis’s "Net" from his "Letting My Guard Down" body of work for it's serene, solitary empty space and color. 3rd Place, I was deeply drawn into the unusual landscape by artist Mark Roussel from his series "Finding and Losing My Father."
