These memories have nourished and sustained me somehow. LENSCULTURE EMERGING TALENT AWARD EXHIBTION

Klompching Gallery and LensCulture present the laureates of the 2017 LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards. The 50 photographs are a selection of the strongest and most memorable work sent in by photographers working in over 160 countries around the world. You'll discover serious documentary and photojournalism projects, as well as our aesthetic celebrations of the interplay of light, color, form and texture, creative work from all parts of the globe. A single photograph has been chosen from each award-winning series, curated by Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching.

 Reality + Imagination

"The tide and sand constantly moving while merging with all the different disparate elements on their path, ever changing to create what’s to be in the instant. These images were created during that fraction of space and time. It is a dance between the reality within these defined boundaries and the constant filtering of these occurrences by the imagination. The aim is to interpret the reality presented on the spot and in doing so challenge the imagination. This aim is extended as an invitation as well to the viewers, to be part of the process and create the opportunity to make the image their own. The hope is to have an ongoing process that’s alive." – Leslie Jean-Bart

Born in 1954 in Haiti, Leslie Jean-Bart received a BA in American History in 1976 as well as a Master degree in Journalism in 1977 from Columbia University. He traveled to various part of the world as a freelance and commercial photographer for over 25 years winning awards for various books and cover arts he has contributed to.  But his formal education in the arts took place at Sotheby’s and Christies where he had full access to all media of arts and took complete advantage of that exposure to learn during the combined eight years he worked at both places as a photographer.

The next Workshop will be in July in Jacmel, Haiti. The kids need digital cameras for the Project. If any of you have an extra camera or work for companies that might be able to donate, please contact the Zanmi Lakay organization below.

Zanmi Lakay is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for current and former street children in Haiti by providing educational and economic opportunities and resources to help these children. If you would like to donate towards any of the Workshop's expenses in Haiti, read more here.

Wyatt Gallery (a person not a place) grew up in Philadelphia. He's received numerous awards such as the Fulbright Fellowship, the PDN 30, and 25 Under 25 Up-and-Coming American Photographers by Duke University. His photographs have been exhibited throughout the U.S.A. and are in major private and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the George Eastman House, and American Express. In 2011, Wyatt published Tent Life: Haiti with Umbrage Editions. 100% of the royalties from the sale of this book go to Haitian Relief.

Susan May Tell donated two of her portraits (at top) of Hungarian-born Master Photographer, André Kertész (1894 – 1985), known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition and developing the photo essay. He is recognized today as one of the seminal figures of photojournalism. May Tell photographed Kertész on four different occasions and was also photographed by him in return with her own camera.
