Today we feature Elizabeth Avedon’s Mixtape and learn more about her remarkable life and celebrate her contributions to our community. Elizabeth carries a lifetime of creative seeing, that combined with her exposure to the greats of design and photography, add up to a remarkable ability to make her mark on all aspects of design that surround the photograph. Her down-to-earth generosity and unflagging enthusiasm for all things photographic make her a very special member of our community. It is with great pleasure that I introduce THE ELIZABETH AVEDON MIXTAPE!

LENSCRATCH is a daily journal that explores contemporary photography and offers opportunities for exposure and community. Created in 2007, Aline Smithson set a goal of writing about a different photographer each day, presenting work in a way that allows for a deeper understanding of a photographer’s intent and vision. Traveling from the Arctic tundra of the Svalbard Archipelago to the Sonoran desert in Arizona since 2010, this new exhibition includes large format photographs of key global seed banks as well as archival pigment prints and digital chromogenic lenticular prints of x-ray collages of seeds and plants."

Imagining Paradise: "Imagining Paradise reflects a new world in Keith Carter's visionary universe. With decreased eyesight following a medical condition Mr. Carter explains: "...my current visual world is now flat and two dimensional, similar to looking at a medieval painting, and scattered with black holes, mottled shapes, sparkles, and occasional light shows..." Keith Carter's new photographs of paradise are inspired by a deterioration of the real that Keith has turned into an ideal: "Using traditional silver-rich film and photographic papers, along with arcane chemistry and non-traditional technique, I am paying homage to the mystery of binocular vision and the history of the medium itself.""

Photographer Gay Block began taking portraits in 1973 of her own affluent Jewish community in Houston, later expanding this to include South Miami Beach and girls at summer camp. In 2006, Block re-photographed the women who were girls in her 1981 series from Camp Pinecliffe, twenty-five years before. Block's photographs are included in museums and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, San Francisco MoMA and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

January 22, Block will present an overview of her career, talk about how her work as a portrait photographer has given her insight into life and love, and sign copies of her recently released Radius book, About Love. Photographs and Films 1973-2011 at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe.
