Project 562 By Matika Wilbur is a visual narrative of Tribal sovereignties in the US, covering over 400 Tribal Nations in all 50 states to “change the way we see Native America”. Matika’s extraordinary creative initiative and singular body of work began after a dream with her grandmother, who asked her to photograph their own peoples. Matika honors her ancestor by portraying the richness and diversity of lived experiences of Indian Country with bold and inspired creativity.

Designed with a weather-sealed body and crafted to last a lifetime, the Leica Q2 cameras will be gifted to this year's award recipients: Matika Wilbur, Karen Zusman and Anna Boyiazis so they can continue their groundbreaking work for years to come. 

 

To further elevate the voices of these female award recipients and their diverse photographic subjects, the new awardees will also be offered opportunities to participate in Leica Gallery exhibitions and Leica Akademie workshops as well as receive mentorship from notable photographers in the industry.

PHOTOGLOBAL: The School of Visual Arts Emerging International Photographer Grants

The School of Visual Arts in New York City has announced the availability of two $35,000 tuition grants for emerging international photographers to it's PhotoGlobal program.

PhotoGlobal is a one year international program for young and advanced photographers to share in the vast creative opportunities that New York City offers, and provides the photographic community of the School of Visual Arts as a portal for that experience. The goal of this post-baccalaureate certificate program is to provide critical rigor and develop an individual's work through critique, lectures, museum and gallery seminars and a dialogue with faculty and the other participants.

ADAM MAGYAR, now living in Berlin, was born in Debrecen, Hungary. Magyar, Jeffris Elliott and 4 other photographers won the 2009 Photography Now PQ #99 contest. Debra Klomp Ching, co-owner of KLOMPCHING GALLERY was Juror. Their work will be published in issue #99 of Center for Photography at Woodstock's PQ Magazine. Magyar's work has won several other awards, including the 2009 International Photography Awards 1st Place in Fine Art/Collage for Squares and 1st Place in Special/Aerial for Squares, 2006-2007 Josef Pecsi Scholarship and the Hungarian Press Photo Grand Prize in 2004. I asked Magyar about this series:

Can you give a short detail of how you arrived at this project?
I like to work with simple, real and obvious matters like pedestrians. I started experimenting with different digital techniques, because I did not find places that I wanted to see in my images. I wanted to depict people in endless and seamless environments, without recognizable or particular surroundings. The images are really detailed, you can see a lot of tiny things if you go close to them.

Did you set up the people in the image #517?
In a sense I did. All the squares are artificially set up from hundreds of images that I took from about 4-5 meters high of pedestrians on sidewalks. This distance, or rather, closeness allows me to create extremely high-resolution images, thus allowing the viewer to survey each person close-up. Yet, observing the image at close range makes it possible for us to see it as a whole, while looking at it from a distance results in losing all the details.

JOSE LUIS RODRIGUEZ won this year's Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009 Award, beating 43,135 entries from 94 countries and in over 17 categories. "In Spain, the population of Iberian wolves is thought to number 1000-2000 in the north, with a few isolated populations in the south. José Luis risked a slow shutter-speed to reveal the moonlit sky and conjure up the atmosphere of the place. He switched from using his Nikon D2X to a Hasselblad for the exact framing he had in mind." Serial No. 3817131 represents my effort to come to terms with the experiences of being a soldier from the perspective of an adult. My service had been a period of utter loneliness, mixed with apathy and pensiveness, and at the time I was too young to understand it all.

RACHEL PAPO was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Israel. She began photographing as a teenager while attending a reknowned fine-arts high school in Haifa. At eighteen she served in the Israeli Air Force as a photographer which inspired her current project titled after her own service number–Serial No. 3817131. Her project Desperately Perfect was shot in the renowned Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Rachel was selected as a finalist in the running to be the 2009 Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year, with Serial No. 3817131, as part of the 2009 International Photography Awards, and is nominated for a Lucie Award. The winner will be revealed at the Lucie Awards gala ceremony, at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York, on October 19, 2009. Serial No. 3817131 was also selected as a 2nd place winner in the 2009 International Photography Awards, in the People: Culture pro category. Images from Desperately Perfect were selected to appear in the 2009 American Photography 25 anniversary annual book. Rachel will be speaking Oct. 18th at the En Foco and Lucie Foundation ARTIST TALK. REVIEW SANTA FE 2009: Reviewer Schedule

SANTA FE: This was my first time returning to New Mexico since working as Director at Photo-Eye Gallery in Santa Fe a couple of years ago. I formally reviewed twenty seven photographers portfolio's over two days at Review Santa Fe 2009. I was very impressed with the overall level of work I was shown. The work had first been juried by Amber Terranova, Photo Editor, Photo District News (PDN) , Ann Pallesen, Gallery Director, Photographic Center Northwest, and Laura Addison, Curator of Contemporary Art, New Mexico Museum of Art before it came to us. Laura Wzorek Pressley, Executive Director of CENTER and her crew did an amazing job of organizing this event.

Day One: Arrived in Santa Fe and immediately met up with friend Jack Woody (Twin Palms/Twelvetrees Press publisher) for lunch before the Orientation at The Lodge at Santa Fe where the Portfolio Review takes place. In the evening we all headed over to the Photo-Eye Gallery for Debbie Fleming Caffery's The Spirit And The Flesh opening exhibition and book signing. Caffery's book, published by Radius Books, sold 5 at a time that night. The exhibition was beautifully hung and Debbie was (happily) inundated with book signing all evening.

Photo-eye Director Rixon Reed and Photographer Vicki Bohannon graciously made a buffet dinner for ALL 100 participating photographers and 50 Reviewers under the portal between Photo-eye's Gallery and Bookstore.

Day Two: The Review session began at 10:00 and lasted until 3:00 PM with each review lasting 20 minutes. In the evening all the Reviewers headed over to CCA/Center For Contemporary Arts to view all of the 100 Photographers Portfolio's which were spread out in CCA's huge space.

Day Three: Beginning at 9AM, we reviewed Portfolio's solidly until 6:10PM. It was very intense and felt like running a marathon. I need a week to process all the images I saw. Dinner at Il Piatto with Placitas, NM based Artist Photographer Fernando Delgado.

Day Four: In the DFW Airport hub I sat in on an Enlightening lunch conversation between Anthony Bannon, Director, George Eastman House and Award Winning PhotoJournalist Benjamin Lowy. Now going through all the websites and CD's given to me by the Photographers I reviewed. I'll profile some of the work on future posts.
