The Los Angeles Center of Photography's Fifth Annual Portfolio Reviews. EXPOSURE WEEKEND 2019 will be filled with reviews, classes, seminars, exhibitions and networking events. Reviews are 20 minute face-to-face meetings with gallery owners, photo editors, museum curators, publishers and other photo professionals. In addition to the Portfolio Reviews, Exposure Weekend will feature several Workshops and Seminars.

"For this billboard exhibition, my intention is to expose privacy and intimacy on a collective and public scale. My hope is to transport the audience away from the collective and into the private, and vice versa.” – Mona Kuhn

Mona Kuhn is a highly acclaimed artist and longtime Californian, attending the San Francisco Institute of the Arts before moving to Los Angeles, where she has resided for over 10 years. Known for her large-scale dreamlike images of the human form, her work often references classical themes, though recent works have begun explorations with abstraction. For this exhibition, she has contributed a collage from her upcoming series and book She Disappeared into Silence with text by curator Salvador Nadales, Museo Reina Sofia, to be published Spring/Summer 2017 by Steidl.

“I chose this work for the billboard because it juxtaposes the audience and viewer, provoking the questions who is the performer and who is the audience? Where does reality end and artifice begin?”– Alex Prager

Alex Prager is a Los Angeles-based artist whose elaborately staged scenes tap into a shared cultural memory. She frequently references Hollywood cinema in her photography and film, using it as a tool for manipulating realities. “The construction of the images is intentionally loaded” says MoMA curator Roxana Marcoci. “It reminds me of silent movies – there is something pregnant, about to happen, a mix of desire and angst.” The work shown, Orchestra Center (Intermission), 2016, was recently presented at a solo exhibition of her work entitled La Grande Sortie at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York.

Jennifer Steinkamp

Jennifer Steinkamp is an installation artist who works with video and new media in order to explore ideas about architectural space, motion, and perception. She completed her BFA, MFA and an honorary PhD from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California, and is currently a professor at University of California Los Angeles. Jennifer’s work has been internationally recognized for pushing the boundaries of synesthetic and experiential artwork, particularly as our technological achievements and access increases.

The Billboard Creative (TBC) announced the debut of its first spring edition featuring artworks by three leading contemporary artists: Alex Prager, Jennifer Steinkamp, and Mona Kuhn. This exhibition is the first in a series of micro-initiatives aimed at keeping the mission of TBC activated throughout the year. These artists were selected for their unique dialogue with film and photography, two of the quintessential artistic mediums of Los Angeles. All three artists live and work in Los Angeles and play a vibrant role in the cultural community, fostering learning and supporting emerging artists. The artworks will be displayed on three prominent billboards across the city, with two billboards located in downtown Los Angeles, and another across from Paramount Studios in Hollywood. The goal of this exhibition, as with all TBC initiatives, is to broaden the reach of public art — transforming the streets of Los Angeles into an open-air museum, accessible to all. 

The billboards are on view the month of April 2017.

Teens - Create an artist’s book, illustrated from your photographs, inspired by LACMA’s diverse collections and campus. Combine text and images as a mystery, journal, fantasy, or your own unique style. Camera basics, using the design elements of light, color, and composition, are emphasized. Photo books will be read and presented on the final day of class as hand-made objects or in digital format. With photographer-artist Loretta Ayeroff.

LACMA, Photography For Teens: Book Project classes meet on the Los Angeles Times Central Court. This class is designed for teens ages 13 and older. All camera formats are welcome. Informed by the prose and imagery of Edgar Allen Poe, Chris Anthony’s “Seas Without A Shore” includes wet plate collodion prints along with color photographs. Part mystic, part conjurer, vaudeville ringmaster and antique portraitist, Chris Anthony is a rare artist. His ability to set both simple and elaborate stages creates elegant enigmas throughout his work that allow the viewer to witness something of a different reality while exploring themes of solitude, hope and survival.

Anthony was born in Sweden, now lives and works in Los Angeles. His work implements the wet plate collodion process beautifully along with using 150 year old lenses. His vision takes us to a selective and sophisticated level of image making with fictional narratives from the bizarre to the banal.

“Making the masks, and many of the props and costumes is a big part of the process and it helps me define this unique and demented little world I live and shoot in. The mysteries of the sea is certainly a big part of the subject matter in these pictures with color images of survivors braving waves and currents, perhaps the result of a future world where ocean tides will wash away the planet’s coastlines.”

"Loretta Ayeroff is an editorial and fine art photographer based in Los Angeles. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times; Los Angeles, California, New West, and Westways Magazines, amongst other publications. She has taught photography at UCLA Extension; Otis College of Art+Design, Continuing Education Dept., where she ran the AFA Photography Certificate Program for several years; currently teaching at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Loretta has coordinated documentary film series for Otis College of Art+Design and The J. Paul Getty Museum. Her personal work is in several permanent collections, including the Palm Springs Art Museum, where she was included in “Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography, 1945-1982” part of the 2012 Getty Trust Initiative “Pacific Standard Time: Art in Los Angeles, 1945-1980.” She considers the camera her best friend."

SPOT PHOTO WORKS, "THE" new Contemporary Photography Gallery in Los Angeles, opens with an exhibition of photographs by artist Dennis DeHart. "Compelled by the connections and conflicts of the natural and cultural worlds, Dennis DeHart's images weave together a mix of landscape, portraiture and still life into pristine color photographs. During a recent artist residency in Finland, DeHart traversed the countryside extensively. The resulting photographs are heavily influenced by Scandinavian aesthetics of light, design, craftsmanship and simplicity."

SPOT Photo Works is a partnership between Kathleen Clark and Russell Adams. SPOT’s Director Kathleen Clark, has mounted exhibitions at a variety of locations including Clark|Oshin Gallery, Leica Gallery Los Angeles and Month of Photography LA. Russell Adams has owned and operated Schulman Photo Lab (located next door to SPOT) since 1991.  The boutique analog darkroom and digital lab specializes in fine art exhibition printing as well as printing for photographic book projects.  

Spot Photo Works is located at Crossroads of the World one of Los Angeles and Hollywood’s architectural gems. Designed by architect Robert V. Derrah and built in 1936, Crossroads of the World was initially opened as America’s first outdoor shopping mall. Derrah’s unusual design features a central streamline moderne building resembling a cruise ship at dock between buildings reflecting an array of international village themes: Spanish, Moroccan, English Cottage.

Leica Gallery, L.A. is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition of three photographers: award winning international photojournalist MARY ELLEN MARK, Leica photographer and Grammy award winning singer/songwriter SEAL and Los Angeles fashion and celebrity photographer YARIV MILCHAN. MARY ELLEN MARK

 
The exhibition includes 50 iconic gelatin silver prints spanning both Mark's work in cinema as well her profoundly affecting social documentary portraits. Included are several of Mark's iconic Indian Circus images as well as significant environmental portraits from the South, Seattle, as well as New York Street photographs.

In addition to her deep affection for photographing people on the margins of society, Mark has long sustained her career by bringing her talents to Hollywood and European film sets. On display at Leica Gallery are several of her powerful set and backstage portraits capturing intimate moments of movie stars such as Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Johnny Depp. Mark's photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums from New York to China, with work in the local permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, California Museum of Photography (Riverside), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Mark has 18 published books to her credit, including Indian Circus, Falkland Road, and Streetwise.

SEAL 

SEAL grew up in England and quickly established himself as a great singer of soul music. Over the span of his illustrious singing and songwriting career SEAL has won 4 Grammy awards, an MTV Video Music award and sold over 20 million albums worldwide. Seal is presently a Coach for The Voice Australia.

A self proclaimed "photography geek" and ambassador for Leica, Seal views his photographic practice as a means of connecting to people and "stopping time." SEAL has been a loyal Leica Camera collector for 25 years. He started shooting 35mm on the original M3 and more recently with the digital Leica Monochrome. His work on display at Leica Gallery includes environmental portraits from the streets of Varanasi, India as well as self-portraits.

YARIV MILCHAN

 
Photographer and film producer Yariv Milchan is Israeli born, educated in France and attended college in Los Angeles. Milchan describes himself as a "self taught photographer" beginning with early internships with world famous fashion photographers that eventually led to jobs with Vanity Fair magazine. Yariv's photographs share a depth and beauty whether he focuses his lens on the stunning California landscape or the sinuous curvature of a woman's back. The common thread always sewing his body of work together is his love of capturing great light, nature and beauty. His exhibition presents a selection of both his landscapes and portraits. "Skarbakka photographs himself perpetually falling to an uncertain fate in a series of ambiguous narratives. Fahey/Klein Gallery presents "ENDURE: An Intimate Journey with the Chinese Gymnasts", the first exhibition in the western world of this project from contemporary photographers, Jonathan Anderson and Edwin Low. The exhibition is comprised of large-scale color photographs taken over a two-year period documenting the elite Chinese gymnasts, their challenging and dedicated training program, their character, and the team's training facilities in Beijing.

Athletics, endurance, and the process of training have inspired Anderson + Low for over twenty years, but it wasn't until 2009 that the duo was granted exclusive and completely unique access to photograph the Chinese gymnasts.   Nobody has been given this access, and the results are as unprecedented as they are extraordinary. Over the following two years, Anderson & Low would work to create a documentary series that reinvents traditional sport imagery. Whereas conventional sport photography primarily focuses on the winning moment, or an instance of heartbreaking defeat-Anderson & Low's images explore the mental and physical process of training itself, and the structure and discipline the young gymnasts endure. The images capture powerful moments of stillness and transcend into a study of the human condition in microcosm, an examination of the purest human emotions under intense pressure. Although the images have a distinctly contemporary feel, athletics, training, and competition are among the most ancient and earliest depicted themes. Anderson & Low's images reference classic Greek and Roman forms, and the ancient ideal of the trained athlete. Their photographs examine the tension between the athlete's ideal and the very real limitations of the human body.

Anderson + Low state that the goal of the project is to celebrate the extraordinary athletes they have spent years photographing alongside, and of whom they remain in awe. They use the word "Endure" in a triumphal sense, celebrating these gymnasts' stamina, endurance, dedication, character and through this they celebrate the human spirit as a whole. Their images avoid judgment; instead, the detailed scrutiny in these images conveys the physical and mental experiences of the athletes, and the photographers' feeling of respect and admiration towards the athletes' strength, grace, power and determination. This became evident to the photographers when they first witnessed the athletes training in their massive gymnasium in early 2009, "We experienced profound emotion, intimate and powerful, made all the more intense by this primal response being so unexpected. It was, and still is, unforgettable; until that moment, we had not known that sport could still make us feel something so simple, as though it was the first time we have ever seen people train." Since 1990, Jonathan Anderson and Edwin Low have been collaborating creatively as Anderson + Low. Their work has been exhibited internationally, and belongs to many public and private collections including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Victoria + Albert Museum, London; National Portrait Galleries (United Kingdom and Australia); National Gallery of Australia; Museum of Fine Art, Houston; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and La Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris among many others. EA: Where did you two meet?
Jonathan Anderson: We met in a photographic facility in London 25 years ago October the 12th this year. We’ve been working as the team 'Anderson + Low' for over twenty years.   Edwin Low: We submitted some work for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. It was quite unique because it was the first time they accepted Photography as an art form in the Royal Academy. The rest is history.  Jonathan Anderson: We thought we’d better take ourselves seriously and carry on, so that's where it all started.

“Mike Brodie spent years crisscrossing the U.S. amassing a collection, now appreciated as one of the most impressive archives of American travel photography. At 17 he hopped his first train close to his home in Pensacola, FL thinking he would visit a friend in Mobile, AL. Instead the train went in the opposite direction to Jacksonville, FL. Days later, Brodie rode the same train home, arriving back where he started. Nonetheless, it sparked something and he began to wander across the U.S. by any means that were free - walking, hitchhiking and train hopping. Shortly after, he found a Polaroid camera stuffed behind a car seat. With no training in photography and coke-bottle glasses, the instant camera was an opening for Brodie to document his experiences. As a way of staying in touch with his transient community, he shared his pictures on various websites gaining the moniker “The Polaroid Kidd”. When the Polaroid film he used was discontinued, Brodie switched to 35mm film and a sturdy 1980’s camera.”–Twin Palms

After Hours, at Fahey/Klein in L.A., is the first U.S. exhibition from contemporary photographers Billy+Hells. This retrospective exhibition is comprised of their ethereal portraits and atmospheric landscape series. “Billy + Hells” is the pseudonym for the creative duo comprised of Berlin based photographers Anke Linz and Andreas Oettinger.

"Billy+Hells’ photographs exist in a world of in-betweens. Their deceptively simple, straightforward portraits convey a certain complexity. The archetypal characters depicted in their photographs—mothers, soldiers, cowboys, nurses, and teachers— possess an underlying sense of mystery, hinting at the duality of the sitter as well as the fictional world they inhabit. Although Billy + Hells’ images call upon historical and art historical references, their portraits are not burdened by the stipulations of historical recreations. Instead, seamlessly blending past and present, reality and fantasy, their photographs become a nostalgic diary, purposefully left open for interpretation."– Fahey/Klein
